The 2016 City of Rockingham WA State Youth Championships kick off today, Wednesday 27 September 2016, from The Cruising Yacht Club of WA (TCYC). Following a four day development camp, Westsail, 94 entries will now continue on to the Championship event.
The development camp was completed over four days from TCYC and similar to other youth event begin each morning with fitness sessions. Following each morning session consisted of breakfast and a morning briefing from long time camp coordinator and Australian Sailing’s Chief Dinghy Instructor, Christ Goldacre. Many past athletes will tell you Goldacre also known as ‘Goldy’ was the highlight of their Westsail experience with many humorous stories told over breakfast, lunch and dinner.
In addition to the on water component athletes were visited by Rio 2016 Olympian Carrie Smith and Rio 2016 Paralympic Gold Medalist, Colin Harrison, who were able to speak about their experiences at the recent Olympic and Paralympic Games, inspiring an audience of junior and youth sailors inspiring for great achievements.
This year’s championships will see a number of up and coming youth sailors to watch including Bee Allison, Australia’s highest placing girl at this year’s Laser 4.7 World Championships, along with Finn O’Dea who placed 20th overall at the same event.
Similarly, in the Optimist Fleet is Axel Fleet, who placed 7th at the 2016 Optimist Nationals. Following a successful top 10 result Fleet will have an opportunity to make his mark at this State event.
