Queensland Youth Championships entries reach all – time high

by Kate Lathouras

Entries for the 2016 Queensland Youth Camp and Championships have hit an all-time high with current registrations surpassing those ever recorded by host, Keppel Bay Sailing Club.

Currently entered for this event are 111 boats for the Development Camp, held from the 20 – 22 September, and 92 boats for the Youth Championships, held from the 22 – 25 September. This tops the previous record set back in 2013 by three boats.

Participation at this year’s event soared after the announcement that current Rio 2016 Olympians, Ashley Stoddart and Jake Lilley, will be attending the development camp to share their knowledge to the up and coming youth sailors. In addition to providing coaching they will also be featured at the 2016 Queensland Youth Camp and Championships Sportsman’s Dinner held on 21 September from 6:30pm. Keppel Bay Sailing Club have been the host of the Queensland Youth Championships and Development Camp for the past eight years and prides itself on providing high quality coaching for their competitors.

Ben Callard, Regional Manager for Queensland believes the value in this event is generated by the participants and the host Club:

“This year we see a record number of participants, which can be accredited to two groups; firstly, the Keppel Bay Sailing Club for their commitment to deliver a high quality event and secondly, the sailors and families who show your support for this event and recognise its importance on the junior and youth sailing calendar.

We are extremely proud to have 5 Queenslanders make up the 11 person Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Team. Three of those sailors attended this camp as passionate, dedicated young sailors only a few years ago sailing their chosen youth classes and we’re glad to see the cycle continue as they return to inspire the next generation of sailors.”

Entries for the 2016 Queensland Youth Camp and Championships will be accepted until 0900 on Friday 23 September. For more information and to register visit www.youthchamps.org.au.
