Australian Youth Championships – 100 days to go!

by Kate Lathouras

With just under 100 days to go, 2017 Australian Youth Championships competitors are encouraged to register for this pinnacle youth event via the Youth Champs website, This year the event will be held at the Adelaide Sailing Club (ASC) from the 10 – 14 January 2017.

After eight years this event returns to South Australia and is one of the few Clubs to hold this event in the Ocean; the last time these youth championships were held offshore was in 2015 when Fremantle Sailing Club hosted the event.  Ian Leeson, Regional Manager, for South Australia is proud to have this event return again.

‘’It’s fantastic for South Australia to be hosting the Australian Youth Championships this coming summer, the last time the event was sailed in SA was 2009, so it’s going to be great to have everyone back to our coastline again this coming season.

“Hosting the event is a great opportunity for us to showcase Adelaide as an ideal location for competitive sailing, the influx of competitors to the coastline will really boost the profile of the sport with in the state.  We hope to see a flow on of this into participation programs up and down the coast at the various Discover Sailing Centres,” said Ian.

In addition to registering for the regatta competitors will also need to complete the ASADA Level One Anti- Doping online course.  By completing this compulsory course, competitors will build personal awareness of their anti- doping obligations as athletes.  For more information and to complete this course click here.

Not included in this year’s Youth Championships is the Nacra 15 class which will have a separate event in April 2017. This will provide enough time for teams to gather a boat and head to Wangi for the separate event. More information on this can be found here.

Past competitor and already registered in this year’s Australian Youth Championships is 29er sailor and one of the first Nacra 15 owners, Georgia Payne; she and crew, Jack Luketina, intend to do both events to get the maximum experience,

“Although our main goal is to compete at the Nacra 15 Youth Championships in April we wouldn’t miss the opportunity for high quality fleet racing at a National level. We look forward to competing at the Australian Youth Championships this January in the 29er; I think this will boost our skills in boat handling and fleet racing and this we can transfer over to the Nacra,” Georgia said.
