Registration now open for 2016/17 Australian Youth Championship - Nacra

by Kate Lathouras

Youth sailors interested in competing in the 2016/17 Australian Youth Championship - Nacra, to be held from 14 - 17 April 2017 at the Wangi RSL Amateur Sailing Club in NSW, can now register for the event via the Australian Youth Championships website,

The Notice of Race and Online Entry allows youth competitors, under 19 years of age, to secure their spot in the first Australian Youth Championship for the Nacra 15 class.

The Nacra 15 only becomes available in December, so event organisers have separated this Class from the Australian Youth Championships, scheduled for 10 – 14 January 2017 at the Adelaide Sailing Club.

Australian Sailing National Regatta Manager, Lesley Fasala explains, “The Nacra 15 class will send their first shipment of boats to Australia at the beginning of December with a second shipment coming later that month.  We have separated the class from the 2017 Australian Youth Championships to allow competitors an opportunity to practice and get accustomed to the new boat.  By April next year we should have close to 20 boats in Australia.”

The Nacra 15 class is the new youth pathway boat to the now established Olympic Nacra 17 class. The boat will eventually be sailed in the same arrangement as its senior counterpart, with only mixed crews eligible to compete, but for this regatta the crew arrangement will be open to any combination.  The results of these Championships will be used by Australian Sailing towards selecting crews to represent Australia in the 2017 World Sailing Youth Sailing Championships.  This is in combination with the Australian Sailing Selection Policy for the Australian Sailing Youth Team, which forms part of the conditions.

Darren Bundock, Australian Sailing Multihull Development Officer and Coach for Australia, is excited with what this development means for the sport of sailing, saying, “This is the first time World Sailing have made a long term commitment to a youth catamaran class.  Choosing the Nacra 15 is a great advancement for youth sailors as they now have a pathway for Olympic sailing and we’re able to grow our numbers which ultimately benefit everyone’s development.

“A number of camps will be held prior to the Youth Championships in April.  The first camp will take place in late December in Lake Macquarie, with another one in January, then in April just prior to the regatta. For more information on this, people are encouraged to contact me” Darren said.

Entries for the Australian Youth Championship – Nacra close on 24 March 2017 at midnight. With a couple of busy months ahead, event organisers are encouraging competitors to register early.
