Victorian cat sailor aims for 2017 Australian Youth Champs – Nacra 15 win

by Australian Sailing - Kate Lathouras

Victorian catamaran sailor, Jack Challands, is looking forward to competing at the 2017 Australian Youth Championships – Nacra 15 being held in two weeks at the Wangi RSL Amateur Sailing Club from the 14 – 17 April.

Jack has been sailing ‘cats’ for the past four years and believes knowing the behaviour of them will have an advantage at this regatta. Jack said,

“There’s a bit of an advantage of having a background in sailing cats as the boat handling is a bit more familiar but the Nacra 15 is quite different to the other types of cats I have sailed before. The curved boards definitely affect how I steer the boat.”

Jack has recently competed in two cat world championships in as many years earning a top 20 and top 10 result in each event. Jack explained,

“I competed at the F16 World Championships in Belgium last year and finished 18th overall and 2nd youth boat. I also competed in the Viper World Championships held in Geelong earlier this year and finished 9th/ 2nd youth. I’m looking forward to competing at this event and have had some great coaching from Darren Bundock and James Wierzbowski so I think Lachie (my crew) and I will have a good chance of doing well at this event.”

The decision to choose the Nacra 15 as the cat pathway class follows World Sailing's announcement, selecting the Nacra 15 as the multihull to be used at the Youth World Sailing Championships from Dec 2016 onward and the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. Read more here.

Due to most of the Nacra 15 boats becoming available domestically within the last couple months, the Nacra 15 class was not included in the Australian Youth Championships in January but scheduled for April to allow enough time for the sailors to prepare for this event.

This is also the selection event for Australian youth sailors to be selected for and join the 2017 Australian Sailing Youth Team to compete at the Sailing Youth World Championships later this year
