About School Sailing

What is Teams Racing?

The recognised format for the Team Racing World Championship involves racing in two handed dinghies, three a side. The boats are provided by the organisers to ensure that they are evenly matched, and are of a type that can be sailed effectively without there being a premium on strength or an optimum weight. This means there is no gender advantage for boys or girls.

The two teams of three race to try and achieve a winning combination of places – the lowest score wins. The scoring system is usually: 1st place – 1 point 2nd place – 2 points 3rd place – 3 points and so on.

A team that scores ten or less is therefore the winner, so that 2,3,4 beats 1,5,6 – being first past the post does not guarantee glory!

To maintain order and competitiveness all racing umpired on the water. Everything happens very quickly and there is no better school for tactical decision making and understanding of the rules.

What is Sprint Racing?

Sprint Sailing is a format of racing we’ve developed especially for our school competititions. Sprint Sailing is conducted in supplied one person OziOptis and 2 person Pacers, meaning schools don’t need the 8 students normally required for a Team Sailing Competition.

Crews rotate through round robins of high frequencey, short intense races lasting 8-12 minutes.

The aim is to finish as fast as possible, as opposed to Team Sailing where you’ll give up 1st place to trap an opponentand let a team mate through. In Sprint Sailing the rules are mostly self policed, but we do have an umpire on th water to help out when sailors are not sure if a rule was broken.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
